Sarah Gaw constantly searches for intriguing places to photograph. Using a Holga camera and 2 1/4 fine-grained film, she photographs locations that have unique architectural elements and a limited color palette. Her style is free; she is unconcerned with the results until the editing process. As she shoots, she creates multiple exposures in the camera by releasing the shutter repeatedly before advancing the film.
After an extensive editing process, she scans the film and prints the images digitally. The final images are faithful to the original film. Much like in darkroom printing, she darkens or lightens distracting areas. There is virtually no digital alteration of the integrity of the image.
Sarah's work is influenced by her musical training. Visual rhythm is evident in her work. Composition and atmosphere are essential.
As an artist and print-maker, Sarah is established in the Boston arts community. She began her career at Singer Editions where she excelled in advising artists about the powerful advantages of digital printmaking. Under her guidance, clients recognized digital imaging as both a means of creating artwork and a method of promoting their work. Her reputation for collaborating with artists led her to start a consulting business, Sarah Gaw Consulting. As a consultant, she advises painters and photographers on aesthetics, printing, organization and marketing. She develops a clear understanding of her clients' artistic processes and helps them articulate and advance their goals as artists.
Sarah divides her time between consulting and working at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, where she manages a fine-art printing lab. She assists students, faculty and staff in image editing and printing.
At The Brookline Arts Center, she has taught photography classes, built a darkroom and designed a camera obscura for a gallery installation. Her photography has been shown at the art center during annual events and as part of the camera obscura exhibition. From June 14 - July 23, 2010, The Brookline Arts Center will present blue, a solo exhibition of her work.
